Signing in, invitations and the banners at the top of the page

This article covers signing up, joining from an invitation, resetting a password, and the bars and banners at the top of the page.

Signing up

Sign up at https://app.contactroll.com/signup with an email address and a password, or press Continue with Google. With a password, ContactRoll emails a confirmation link first; open it on the same device.

  • If you signed up with Google, ContactRoll asks for one check before your organization is made, so it knows a person is making it.
  • If your address is at a work domain where colleagues already use ContactRoll, the page offers Ask to join (their organization). Somebody there who can invite people approves you, and ContactRoll opens on it as soon as they do. Or press Make a new organization instead.

Joining from an invitation

An invitation is for one email address. When you open the link, the sign-in card says which organization invited you and asks you to use the address the invitation was sent to.

  • If you already have a ContactRoll account with that address, sign in. If the address is a Google account, you can press Continue with Google instead.
  • If you don't, choose Create one and make an account with that address. ContactRoll sends a confirmation link; open it and you come back to finish joining.

What the messages mean:

  • "This invitation can't be used by this account": it was sent to a different address, it has expired, or it has been used already. Sign out and sign in with the invited address, or ask the person who invited you to send a new invitation.
  • "Sign in first, then open the link in your invitation again": sign in, then open the link from the email again.
  • "You are a member of that organization already": you're in. Choose the organization from your organization switcher.

An invitation lasts seven days. The Owner or an Administrator can resend it, copy its link, or send a new one from the Team page, at https://app.contactroll.com/team.

Resetting your password

  • On the sign-in card at https://app.contactroll.com/signin, enter your email address.
  • Press Forgot password. ContactRoll says "If that address has an account, a reset link is on its way."
  • Open the link in the email. It brings you to Set a new password.
  • Type your new password twice and press Save password. A new password needs at least 12 characters.

If the email takes more than a few minutes, look in your spam folder, and check that you typed the address you signed up with.

To change your password while you're signed in, open https://app.contactroll.com/set-password. If ContactRoll asks you to have signed in recently, sign out, sign in again, and then set the password.

"Your password is shorter than ContactRoll now asks for"

Your password still works, and this banner invites you to choose a longer one. Press Choose a new password and set one of at least 12 characters.

"This tab has stopped. Reload it"

ContactRoll works in one organization at a time, for you as a person. If you switch organization in another tab, another window or another device, every other tab you have open shows a bar:

  • "You switched to (organization) in another tab." or
  • "You are working in (organization) now: it was switched in another window or on another device."

Press the bar to reload the tab. It opens in the organization you're working in now. The bar keeps anything you do in the old tab from landing in the other organization.

"This organization is read-only"

The banner reads: "This organization is read-only: everyone can read and export, nobody can change anything, send mail or take calls." It appears when the trial has ended with no plan chosen and the organization has more than 3 members, or when payments have stopped. An organization on Free that nobody used for 90 days is read-only too: it works again as soon as a member opens ContactRoll.

  • The Owner and the Administrators see a link to the Billing page, at https://app.contactroll.com/settings/billing. Paying there brings everything back at once.
  • After a trial that ended with more than 3 members, the banner also offers Choose who stays: the Owner keeps up to 3 members and the organization moves to Free at once. The others' seats are paused, not deleted. A member whose seat is paused sees "Your seat in (organization) is paused" and who can give it back.
  • Other members see who can pay.
  • On a paid plan, the banner also shows the day the organization closes if nobody pays. An organization on Free is never closed for it.

While it is read-only, everyone can still read everything, email to your support address still opens cases, and the Owner and the Administrators can remove members and cancel invitations before paying. See "Paying for ContactRoll" for more.

Other banners

  • "Your Plus trial ends in (days)": your organization is in its 14-day trial. The Owner and the Administrators see Choose a plan.
  • "Payment failed": the last payment didn't go through and is being tried again. Everything keeps working. The Owner and the Administrators see which try it was, such as "Payment failed, attempt 2 of 8", and Update card; other members see who can update it.
  • "(Organization) is closed": the account has been closed and shows the day it will be deleted. The Owner can press Reopen this account until then, and the Owner and the Administrators can still download everything. See "Close your account".

"Sign-up opens soon"

When ContactRoll isn't taking new organizations, the sign-up page says sign-up opens soon and gives an address for early access. If you were invited to an organization, open the link in your invitation instead.

Start free, no card

Every new organization starts with a 14-day trial of Plus, with no card. When it ends, a team of 3 people or fewer moves to Free by itself, and a larger team chooses Standard or Plus. There is no second trial.
